**This learning block covers seminars and workshops on 2/11/17 & 9/11/17**

The seminars in this learning block provide an introduction to inferential statistics. In the first week the focus in the first half of the lecture will be on populations and samples and include information on:

  • Statistical models
  • Going beyond the data (standard error, confidence intervals)
  • Statistical models to test research questions
  • Principles of hypothesis testing
  • Distribution of means
  • One and two-tailed tests
  • Type I and Type II errors
  • Statistical power
  • Statistical significance
  • Sample size
  • Effect size (Cohen’s d)
  • Independent and paired samples t-test

In the second half of week 1 we will explore the theory behind statistics that compare the difference between two or more groups. Students will be introduced to independent and paired samples t-test, one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc testing. Some discussion will be dedicated to the pitfalls of performing multiple statistical analyses.

In the second week we explore more complex ANOVA designs such as two-way between, within and mixed designs. The second lecture will conclude with an overview of multivariate ANOVA (MANOVA).
