This information session will introduce the APR Intern Program, which is supported by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training through a $28.2 grant over the next four years (to 2021).

APR (Australian Postgraduate Research) Intern places PhD students, who are mentored by academics, into 3-5 month research Internships with Australian Industry Partner Organisations, including Government, Businesses and Not-for-Profit partners. All PhD students studying at Australian Universities are eligible for the APR Intern program. Any industry partner organisation external to Australian Universities is eligible for funding.

Learn how to create a custom PhD research collaboration with a partner organisation that you know – or apply for one of APR Intern’s advertised research projects across all research disciplines. Come and hear about some of the PhD and academic mentor research collaborations that APR Intern has facilitated in the past. Come and hear the experiences of academic mentors and VU students who have participated or are currently participating in the APR Intern program. Come and hear about some of the projects that APR Intern are currently advertising.

APR Internship research collaborations don’t have to be part of a PhD thesis (although they can be), but give PhD students a chance to conduct a small-scale research collaboration while embedded into a partner organisation. Projects may be on a different topic to the PhD thesis as long as they are research or R&D projects. The APR Intern program is not just another work experience program! APR Intern is Australia’s only national research internship program.

PhD research Interns receive a $3,000 per month stipend for the duration of the project (in addition to any current stipends). PhD students must remain enrolled in their PhD programs.

Mentoring Academics receive a $5,500 research grant; projects count as track record for ARC Linkage; Project Funding (stipend +mentor grant) counts as HERDC external income

Industry Partner Organisations fund project costs and may be eligible for a 50% rebate, paid by APR Intern and supported by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training.

There are 1400 x 50% rebates available nationally over the next 4 years.
