This three day course is designed for participants who want to strengthen their knowledge and skills in the practice of qualitative research.

The course will be of interest to participants who have a basic grounding in qualitative research methods, but seek more detailed information about the analysis, validity and representation of qualitative data.

The three days will be run consecutively. HDR students must have achieved Confirmation of Candidature and not previously undertaken this workshop via ACSPRI.

Attendance on all three days is required - places are strictly limited for this workshop series and in registering you are committing to attend over the three days.  Participants will gain a fuller understanding by attending all sessions as the content builds across the three days.

A particular emphasis is the underpinning epistemological stances that influence the conduct of qualitative research and their implications for research practice. The sessions will be interactive and participants are encouraged to share their own research issues – including the challenges and opportunities offered by qualitative research.

Day 1: Epistemological and methodological foundations informing research. The importance of epistemology and methodology in qualitative research. Identification of research, values, stance, and voice. Designing qualitative research – common design frameworks (grounded theory, ethnography, case study).

Day 2: Data collection and Data Management:   Types of evidence and decision rules for their use including interviews (individual, group and focus group), observation and document analysis.

Day 3: Data Analysis, validity/trustworthiness and representation of qualitative research.  Considerations in generating research claims, the nature of evidence in qualitative research, reporting options, voice in qualitative inquiry.  Writing research.
