Step Up to Principal – Part Two

‘Step Up to Principal’ is a program in VU’s suite of supervisor professional development. It is specifically designed to support progression from Associate Supervisor (Level 1) registration to Principal Supervisor (Level 2) by equipping supervisors with the knowledge and skills required to be the leader of a supervisory team and to be effective in overseeing a graduate research candidate through all the stages of candidature for a research degree, from initial selection to thesis examination and classification.
Part 2 is a two-hour session and will focus specifically on (Part Two and Three together will ensure all topics below are covered)
- What makes an ideal supervisor? How each individual in the supervisory team adds to the group to make a “combined” ideal supervisor
- Supervisory expectations
- Supervisory roles – principal and associate supervisors
- Managing candidature with your students
- HDR student understanding of threshold concepts
- Developing your skills as a mentor
- Discussion of supervisory scenarios
